When a new trend first gains prominence, it often takes time to make a big impact in the real world. But one such trend has been gaining momentum for years now: freelancing. Freelancing has become an integral part of the future of work. It offers professionals a chance to work on projects they are passionate about and enjoy, while also giving them more control over their career path. This has created a win- win situation for both companies and freelancers alike.
As a result, more and more people are opting for freelancing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw how reliance on freelancers helped companies source talent quickly and efficiently. Since then, we’ve seen the freelance trend reshape the workforce in a more permanent way. Freelancing is here to stay, and smart HR leaders will do well to embrace it.
With the right tools and strategies in place, freelancers can build successful, profitable business models that allow them to maintain full control over their careers and life balance. They can focus on high value, lucrative assignments that provide them with the freedom to pursue their own professional goals and interests. They can choose from a variety of flexible work arrangements, ranging from short-term contract work to long-term engagements.
In addition to allowing them to maximize their productivity, freelancers can find a better work-life balance by designing their schedule around their personal needs. They can work in bursts throughout the day, from home or on the go, depending on their individual preferences. This allows them to fit work into their busy lifestyles, ensuring they can keep up with their responsibilities while still making time for family and friends.
For companies, working with freelancers provides the flexibility they need to flex with the changing business environment. They can quickly assemble a team of contractors for a specific project or longer-term engagement, and then dissolve that team when the project is complete. This is particularly important for businesses that operate in uncertain economic times or new markets where it can be risky to invest in a full-time staff.
As the freelance revolution continues, I believe we will see more and more businesses move beyond platforms altogether and seek out clients directly. Instead of building up a reputation of non-portable, platform-specific ratings and reviews, they will invest in a real-world portfolio of testimonials, LinkedIn recommendations and delighted client referrals.
They will get their business accounting in order and learn to deal directly with their clients so they can avoid platform fees and commissions. And as they do, the quality of their work will improve because they will be free from a competitive bidding process with entry-level gigsters who undercut their rates. This will lead to a higher quality freelancer pool and help to ensure that the best experts remain platform-free.
